Lineage

Kōdō (“the way of incense”) entered Japan with Buddhism in the 6th c., blossomed as Heian “incense-blending,” and was systematised in the Muromachi era by Sanjōnishi Sanekoto into “Six Countries, Five Tastes” (Rikkoku-gomi), with the Oie and Shino schools.
