Agarwood Grading: From Ban-tou & Diao-kou to Kyara
Beginners often think "sinks = high grade". Grade is a composite: resin density, aroma layering, origin and formation type together set value. Terms like ban-tou (flat wound on trunk), diao-kou (broken-branch resin) and insect-bored describe the wound's position and shape, not an absolute rank. Compare in the 沉香百科.
From ordinary resin to kyara
Ordinary resin rises as oil and aroma grow richer; when resin is extremely dense, strongly fragrant at room temperature and sticky-sweet when chewed, it enters kyara (qinan) — the apex. But "kyara" is badly overused; demand testing and provenance, see the 奇楠支柱页.
The right grading mindset
Rather than memorize names, train your nose: build a sweet/cool/floral/fruity/medicinal/milky coordinate system and judge by scent. Any grade must meet scent-real, traceable, testable — more in 鉴定支柱页.
