What to Do First After a Bracelet Gets Wet: The Order for Judging Reversible vs. Irreversible Damage

The matter of bracelets getting wet comes up fairly often in collector groups. Looking through various Q&As, the answers mostly stop at the same sentence: agarwood bracelets must not touch water.

2. The usual handling order

This layer needs to be made clear: the following practices come from industry site Q&As and popular science experience circulating in collector circles. They are common practices, not a national standard, nor an industry standard. Details vary slightly among sources; only three steps hold up.

The first step is to absorb water. Use a clean, odorless soft cloth to absorb the water on the surface.

Absorbing and wiping are two different things. Wiping is rubbing back and forth; if the rubbing force is too great, the fibers on the bead surface will fuzz. At this step, better to go slower.

The second step is drying in the shade. Place it in a cool, ventilated place and let the moisture leave slowly on its own.

Usually, the irreversible cases fall into two types.

One type is cracking caused by high temperature, with cracks running from inside the bead outward. Once this appears, the later steps cannot change it.

The other type is prolonged soaking in water. The wood swells when saturated, and after drying it contracts unevenly, so the shape cannot return to its original state.

Conversely, if it was only splashed with a few drops, slightly dampened while washing hands, or caught in a rain shower, and there are no cracks on the surface, no distortion of shape, and no blackening, then it belongs to the category that can still be handled.

So the criterion for judgment is not whether water was touched, but whether deformation and cracks have appeared. This point must be placed first, because the wrong order wastes effort.

4. The three-step check

First, look at the surface. Check whether any part of the bead color has become lighter, and whether there are signs of fuzzing. If so, do not wear it yet; let it dry first.

Second, look at the shape. Are all the beads in the string still round? If several have become flattened, it has been soaked.

Third, look at the holes and string. Is there whitening around the hole walls, and is the string tighter than usual?

If all three pass, the string can continue to be worn. If one fails, dry it in the shade for a few days before checking again; don’t rush to handle it.

5. A reminder for purchasing and acceptance

From an industry perspective, when it comes to getting wet, the one who ultimately bears it is mostly the seller.
