Agarwood Grading: From Ban-tou and Diao-kou to Kyara
Agarwood has no single mandatory national grade, but the trade shares a grading vocabulary. Understanding these words lets you judge sellers' claims. Compare specimens in Chinese Incense Studies · Agarwood Cabinet.
Common grade terms
Ban-tou (board-head): resin on a trunk cross-section, flat like a board; Diao-kou (hanging-mouth): at a branch wound, pendant-shaped; heartwood-oil: at the tree's core, dense and fragrant; shell: thin flakes at bark wounds; insect/ant types from borers; the apex is kyara. Collecting dimensions in the Kyara pillar.
Grade vs. price
Grade language affects pricing, but the core is still resin degree + scent quality + purity. The same term varies wildly between sellers, so never bid on the name alone. Baseline in the Encyclopedia.
Advice for buyers
Treat terms as communication coordinates, not value guarantees; let real scent, traceability and testing speak. Build an olfactory baseline before discussing grades.
