Side Story 13: The Kōno Family Incense Box

1. The Stone Hut

The island is small; a full circuit takes less than half a shichen.

The stone hut stands on the leeward side, its walls built of coral stone with dried coconut husk packed into the seams. Half the roof has collapsed, and wild vines hang down through the gap, tangling the doorframe into a narrow opening.

Wen Ye goes in first, covering his nose and mouth with his sleeve. The room is damp, salt overwhelming everything else. Scattered on the floor are a few ship planks, a broken clay pot, and half an iron nail, its head rusted into a lump.

Liu Zhijiang pauses at the door, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the dark.

"There's something," Wen Ye says.

He crouches in the corner before a wooden box, a size smaller than the camphor-wood casket the Frost Guest left behind. The wood is blackened, as if soaked in seawater and then dried. The lid bears no pattern, only a knife scar slashing diagonally across its entire surface.

Kōno Shizuma walks over, sees the scar, and stops in his tracks.

"The Shadow Guard's blade," he says. "A Kōno blade—once it cuts, it can't be held back, so it leaves a mark."

He reaches out, his fingertip pausing at the edge of the scar without touching it.

"My grandfather made this cut."

2. Inside the Box

There is no incense in the box.

Wang Guanshu uses a bamboo strip to part the debris at the bottom: a layer of dried coconut fiber, a layer of oiled paper, and beneath the paper, a route map folded into four. The paper has grown brittle, its edges sealed with wax—black wax mixed with fine sand.

The map shows islands, reefs, and ocean currents in extremely fine ink lines, with several spots marked by small cinnabar circles. Beside the southernmost circle is a line of small characters, carved with the same knife-tip technique as the character "Yanagi" added to the bottom of the Frost Guest's casket:

Here, await the Kōno.

"Not waiting for a person," Kōno Shizuma says. "Waiting for a surname."

Liu Zhijiang spreads the map on the ship planks. The cinnabar circles run south from the old port of Champa to this island, and then the ink line breaks, leaving only a faint mark pressed out by a fingernail.

"The Frost Guest came here," Wen Ye says, "then went south. The Shadow Guard didn't follow."

Wang Guanshu draws the last item from the bottom of the box. Half a page of a fragmented formula, on bamboo paper from the Wen shop of Bianliang, with the Wen shop's secret mark at the edge. The formula records a method of blending incense; the handwriting belongs to neither the Frost Guest nor the Shadow Guard.

"The Wen shop's hand," she says. "Paper from my mother's family."

3. The Fragmented Formula

Only half the page survives, beginning with a single line:

Orchid Breath cannot burn alone; it must be guided by divided incense, one burner recording one matter only.

Below are listed several ingredients, most rendered illegible by water. Only three can be made out: Champa agarwood, Quanzhou frankincense, and incense ash made by the Wen shop of Bianliang.

"Ash is an ingredient too," Liu Zhijiang says.

"The Wen shop's ash," Wang Guanshu says. "In my grandfather's generation, the Wen shop never let its ash leave the shop. This half page was given by the Wen shop to the Shadow Guard."

Kōno Shizuma studies the fragment for a long time without speaking.

"My grandfather brought this half page to the island," he says. "The Frost Guest left a route map and a single line. The two met, each with their own things. Then the Frost Guest went south, and the Shadow Guard turned back."

"Back where?" Wen Ye asks.

Kōno Shizuma turns the map over. On the back is a fainter line, cut with a knife tip, almost worn smooth by sand:

Nara. Tōdai-ji.

"Back to Nara," he says. "My family's incense house was originally not in Kyoto, but beside Tōdai-ji."

4. Turning Back

Outside the stone hut, wild coconut palms sway in the wind.

Liu Zhijiang lays the route map, the fragmented formula, and the camphor-wood casket side by side. Three things, three origins: the Frost Guest's casket, the Wen shop's formula, the Kōno family's box.

"The Frost Guest waited for the Shadow Guard," he says. "The Shadow Guard came, then left. The Frost Guest didn't wait for the person, so he went south himself."

"No," Kōno Shizuma says. "The Shadow Guard came. The knife scar is here, the box is here. The Shadow Guard left the box for those who came after."

He points to the scar on the lid.

"The Kōno family rule: leave the box, leave no words. If the box is here, the person arrived."

Wen Ye feels a raised spot on the inside of the lid. Turned over, it is half a fingerprint pressed into the wood grain, more complete than the half-print in the Frost Guest's casket.

"The Shadow Guard's," Kōno Shizuma says. "He pressed his print, sealed the box, and returned to Nara."

"Why return to Nara?" Wang Guanshu asks.

Kōno Shizuma looks at the faint fingernail mark on the route map. It begins at the island and ends in an unnamed stretch of sea.

"Because where the Frost Guest went south, the Shadow Guard could not follow," he says. "What the Shadow Guard could do was return to Nara and guard what needed guarding."

5. The Mark

At night, the wind dies down a little.

Liu Zhijiang burns a small piece of incense he carries in the stone hut. Not Six Incense, just ordinary agarwood, used to discern direction. The smoke rises straight, veering south by southwest.

Kōno Shizuma sits by the doorframe, holding the route map close to the firelight, examining it inch by inch.

"This mark," he says suddenly, "is not a fingernail."

Wen Ye leans in.

"It's a knife tip," Kōno Shizuma says. "The Shadow Guard scored the map with his blade—didn't cut through, only left a mark. A Kōno blade scores the map without cutting the paper; it means: something has changed here."

He looks up at Liu Zhijiang.

"The Frost Guest went south. The Shadow Guard knew something had happened in the south. He didn't go because he still had other business on hand."

"What business?"

Kōno Shizuma turns the fragmented formula over. The back is blank, save for a very faint impression, as if another sheet of paper had been pressed against it.

"Nara," he says. "Tōdai-ji. My grandfather returned to Nara not to go home, but to deliver something."

The firelight flickers.

"Deliver what?" Wang Guanshu asks.

Kōno Shizuma does not answer at once. He folds the route map, puts it back in the box, and closes the lid. The knife scar in the firelight looks like an unfinished sentence.

"I don't know," he says. "But there should be another box in Nara."

Wind rises over the sea. Wen Ye stows the camphor-wood casket in his pack; Liu Zhijiang puts out the incense.

Kōno Shizuma is the last to leave. He glances back at the stone hut and turns the knife scar on the lid toward the door.

"Leave the box," he says. "For the next one to come."
