1. The Old House at the Min River Estuary
On the third day after Minor Snow, Liu Zhijiang and Wang Guanshu arrived in Fuzhou. The address given by the Cai family descendants was at an old dock on the north bank of the Min River. The house faced the water, its walls covered in moss. An old woman surnamed Lin opened the door, saying the Cai family had long moved away and had left this courtyard in her care.
"The Cai family left word before they went," Granny Lin placed the key on the table. "They said if anyone came with a bamboo token, show them the third floor tile in the west wing."
The west wing was empty. The floor tile was pried up, revealing a camphor box beneath. The box surface bore no decoration, only a tiny character "Frost" carved in one corner with a knife tip. Wang Guanshu carried the box to the window and examined the wood grain against the light.
"Camphor repels insects—that's the way of storing agarwood," she said. "But this box is neither lacquered nor waxed, which doesn't follow Liu family rules."
Liu Zhijiang placed the bamboo token on the box lid. The token was brought by the Cai family descendants—the Frost Guest's proxy pickup token, with a hollow chrysanthemum heart facing up and half a line of small characters carved on the back: "Pickup by this token, no questions asked."
"Proxy tokens are credentials used in the agarwood trade for collecting goods on behalf of others," Liu Zhijiang said. "But this token has no shop mark, no signature, only the chrysanthemum heart. The chrysanthemum heart is an old mark of the Yanagiu family."
Granny Lin said from outside the door: "The Cai family instructed when they left that the box was not light—something rattled inside."
2. Ash and Ledger
The box was opened. There was no agarwood inside.
A pinch of ash wrapped in oil paper, mixed with extremely fine bamboo shavings. Beneath the ash lay half a page of ledger paper, yellowed, written in running script, only three lines:
One Frost Box, containing the third box, delivered to the Cai boat owner at the Min River estuary.
Swapped midway, replaced with another box, original box left with ash as mark.
Handwritten by the Frost Guest.
Wang Guanshu poured the ash onto a white porcelain dish and spread it with a bamboo pick. The ash was agarwood ash, burned thoroughly, with no charred grains. She leaned close and sniffed, then shook her head.
"There's no base note of Lanshe Dai in the ash," she said. "The third box contained the 'ruler' of Lanshe Dai. If it had truly been burned, the ash should retain a trace of white wood scent. This ash is from other agarwood, just used as filler."
Liu Zhijiang turned the ledger page over. On the back was a faint ink trace, as if bled through from another page. He held it to the window light for a long while, then said: "This page was torn from a booklet. The tear is uneven—the booklet still exists."
"Where?"
"In the Frost Guest's hands."
3. The Shadow Keeper
Yanagiu Shizuma arrived on the third day. He did not enter the courtyard, but stood on the dock steps watching the Min River water. Liu Zhijiang handed him the bamboo token. He took it, turned it over, and scraped the edge of the chrysanthemum heart carving with his fingernail.
"This is not a mark of the Yanagiu Agarwood House," he said. "It is the private mark of the house's 'Shadow Keeper.'"
"Shadow Keeper?"
"The previous generation of the Yanagiu family established a position responsible for substitution and concealment. Not recorded in the genealogy, no name registered, only the token recognized, not the person." Yanagiu Shizuma returned the token to Liu Zhijiang. "In my father's generation, only one Shadow Keeper ever existed. He disappeared after the war; the house presumed him dead."
Wang Guanshu asked: "What was his name?"
"He had no name. Shadow Keepers take no name—they are simply called 'Frost.'" Yanagiu Shizuma looked at the camphor box. "The Frost Guest swapped boxes and left ash as a mark—that is the old Shadow Keeper rule: if the ash remains, the goods are gone. He swapped out the third box, replaced it with an empty one as filler, and took the original box away."
"Where to?"
Yanagiu Shizuma shook his head. "Shadow Keepers only travel by sea. South from the Min River estuary is Quanzhou. South from Quanzhou is farther sea."
4. The Character on the Box Bottom
Wang Guanshu turned the camphor box upside down and tapped the bottom board. The sound was hollow. She pried open the board along the seam with a thin blade. Carved on the inner side of the bottom board was a character, the strokes very shallow, as if scratched with the tip of an agarwood knife.
"Zhan."
Liu Zhijiang looked for a long time. "Champa," he said. "The Frost Guest went to Champa."
"Where is Champa?"
"South of Jiaozhi, another ten days by sea." Liu Zhijiang fitted the bottom board back. "He swapped out the third box, did not return to Nara, nor stay at the Min River estuary. He went south, which means what he sought was not Lanshe Dai, but something beyond Lanshe Dai's 'ruler.'"
Yanagiu Shizuma suddenly said: "Frost Box. He named the box that held the third box 'Frost Box'—not casually. Frost is the Shadow Keeper's code name; box is his container. He put the third box into his own box and took it away, which amounts to hiding Lanshe Dai's 'ruler' within the Shadow Keeper's rules."
"Rules," Wang Guanshu said. "What rules?"
"Shadow Keepers do not return the original item," Yanagiu Shizuma said. "They only ensure the item is not where it should be."
5. The Thread Leads South
Granny Lin brought tea and asked whether the box should be kept. Liu Zhijiang said keep it, but take the bottom board. He wrapped the bottom board in oil paper and placed it in his随身 wooden case.
"Leave the ash here," he said. "The ash is the Frost Guest's mark; we do not take his mark."
Wang Guanshu folded the half ledger page and tucked it between the pages of Wen An's old ledger. "This page was torn from a booklet," she said. "That booklet records the Frost Guest's whereabouts after swapping the box. Champa is only the first stop."
Yanagiu Shizuma stood at the door, watching the Min River water flow east.
"My father once said," he said, "Shadow Keepers do not turn back. If he goes south, he will not go north again."
Liu Zhijiang tucked the bamboo token into his sleeve. "Then we go south."
Outside the window, fog rose over the Min River. Granny Lin was gathering dried fish in the yard; a bamboo pole struck the eaves, making a short sound.
Wang Guanshu closed the lid of the camphor box. In the empty slot at the bottom, the ash remained.
