RMB 241m in Agarwood Loans Across Six Major Producing Areas

On 29 October, the Hainan Provincial Branch of the People's Bank of China held a press conference on the province's financial performance in the first three quarters of 2026. Huang Liang, vice president of Hainan Rural Commercial Bank, said that as of end-September the bank's total assets stood at RMB 422.392 billion, with more than 260,000 outstanding agricultural loan customers and a balance of RMB 64.368 billion — 35.49% of the province's total agricultural loan balance. Inclusive agricultural loans reached RMB 31.5 billion, or 55.35% of the provincial total, accounting for 80.22% of the province's annual increment. Among specialty agriculture and forestry industries, loan balances for areca, hogs, grain, seed, natural rubber and agarwood reached RMB 7.342bn, 2.321bn, 1.502bn, 722m, 479m and 241m respectively. According to Hinews, the bank's agarwood lending now covers major producing areas including Chengmai, Tunchang, Qiongzhong, Haikou, Lingao and Danzhou, with a focus on growers who have mastered "drilling-induced agarwood formation" techniques.

From Quick Returns to Patient Capital: Credit Follows the Chain

Agarwood is one of Hainan's six priority "six trees" specialty forestry industries, alongside coconut, rubber, areca, rosewood and oil tea. All share the same traits: long cycles, heavy upfront investment and slow payback, requiring long-term commitment and patient capital. The bank said it will build industry research teams, map the full industry landscape for specialty tropical sectors such as agarwood, and tailor financial service plans accordingly. It also plans to design integrated service packages covering planting, procurement, processing, cold chain, transport and sales, and to work with guarantee and insurance institutions to build a shared risk ecosystem. Public reports cite a Chengmai agarwood processor that obtained a RMB 2.7 million loan for deep processing, raw material procurement and the development of bracelets, incense sticks and essential oils, extending the business from raw material processing into integrated primary, secondary and tertiary operations.

Industry Observation

Capital flowing into planting and processing is unlikely to move raw material prices in the short term, but it can ease the pressure that leads some plantations to abandon tending and harvest early, which degrades quality — supporting a more stable supply of fine material over the medium to long term.
