What goes into the sticker price

The price of a natural agarwood bracelet is not arbitrary; it stacks several cost layers. Raw material dominates: agarwood is traded by the gram, and prices per gram vary by tens of times across origins and resin content. Craft covers cutting, bead turning, polishing and stringing - and working delicate materials such as qinan stock means lower yield and higher labour fees. Wastage matters too: raw stock is often fragmented and irregular, and bead yield from sink-grade material is lower still. On top of that, per-item testing and traceability certificates, plus retail and after-sales infrastructure, are all priced in.

Price per gram: cutting through size noise

The standard way to judge value is price per gram - total price divided by total weight - which removes the distortion of bead size and count and reflects material grade directly. Publicly cited reference ranges include: Dalagan sink-grade bead strands around 3,000-8,000 yuan per gram; Brunei black qinan sink-grade around 3,000-8,000 yuan per gram; thick Fu Sen red soil sink-grade material around 2,000-12,000 yuan per gram; and top-grade Nha Trang white qinan strands around 10,000-35,000 yuan per gram. At the other end, entry-level plantation incense stock can wholesale for a few hundred yuan per kilogram. A price per gram far below the lower bound warrants suspicion about quality or authenticity; far above the upper bound requires evidence of genuine scarcity.

Authenticate before you compare

Comparison is meaningless without authenticity. Industry coverage advises consumers to first rule out four categories of fakes: substitute timber, glue-powder pressed material, high-pressure compressed stock, and oil-injected or dyed beads. A credible test report must cover more than microscopic structure - LY/T 2904-2017 requires verification of ethanol extract content, the key screen against oil-soaked material, while agarotetrol content is the core chemical indicator of whether the tree truly resinified. A valid certificate should carry the CMA mark, the laboratory seal and the authorised signatory, with one certificate per item and a verifiable number. Complete the four-step loop - verify, grade, compare, check the channel - before deciding whether a price is fair.
