One-Minute Screening for Agarwood and Kyara: Miniature Mass Spectrometry Meets AI Models

Why the trade needs faster screening

Common forms of agarwood fraud include pressure oil-injection, soaking and dyeing, glue filling, and passing ordinary timber off as genuine Aquilaria wood. Conventional routes each have limits: microscopic anatomy depends on highly trained interpretation, while GC-MS and HPLC require lengthy sample preparation. Online marketplaces, exhibition halls and customs checkpoints all need answers on the spot, which makes speed and cost the persistent bottleneck.

The method: miniature MS plus statistical models

According to Instrument.com.cn, Yang Li's team at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine used a PCS-mini MS miniature mass spectrometer, tuning electrospray voltage to 4500 V and collision energy to 1.5 V, bringing each sample analysis down to roughly one minute. In authentic agarwood the group detected characteristic ions at m/z 311 and 319, identified as 6,7-dimethoxy-2-(2-phenylethyl)chromone and agarotetrol — the latter being specific to agarwood and usable as a key marker. Authentic kyara showed characteristic ions at m/z 251 and 281. The study covered 42 batches (28 genuine agarwood, 7 genuine kyara, 7 counterfeit), building PLS-DA and random-forest classification models; six unknown samples fed directly into the model returned consistent predictions.

From lab bench to shop counter

The value of this work lies in demonstrating viable on-site rapid screening: minimal sample quantity and simple preparation, complementing rather than replacing the forestry industry standard LY/T 2904-2017. Accredited CMA/CNAS laboratories issue formal reports admissible in disputes and customs filings; rapid screening handles triage and bulk pre-selection. For collectors and buyers the practical checklist is unchanged: does the laboratory hold CMA accreditation, can the certificate be verified by number on the issuer's official platform, and does each item carry its own matching certificate.
