The development is seen as validation of the 'lab-to-market' model in Malaysian higher education. The report notes that the global agarwood market is currently valued at over US$1 billion and remains a significant untapped economic opportunity, while the perfume's commercialisation aligns with Malaysia's national agenda of moving from raw timber exporter to a research-driven hub for high-value downstream industries.

Grading and pricing: from experience to comparability

The global agarwood trade has long struggled with complex quality assessment: the value of chips and oud oil varies markedly with species, resin characteristics, aroma profile, chemical composition and extraction method. Without consistent criteria, buyers and sellers rely on individual experience, subjective judgement and established trading relationships, making comparison difficult and pricing uncertain. Malaysia's Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, MTIB and FRIM, together with industry players, are advancing a more systematic grading and pricing framework. FRIM has previously organised an agarwood grading workshop exploring product classification, species identification, electronic-nose technology, AI-assisted oil grading and sensory evaluation, laying groundwork for continued research-industry cooperation.

Sustainable cultivation is becoming the competitive threshold

A second thread is the move up the value chain: from sustainably cultivated agarwood, to scientifically assessed AA-grade chips, to distilled pure oil, aged oil and branded fragrance products. For premium export markets, sustainability must be backed by verifiable evidence - plantation records, inoculation data, harvesting documentation, batch traceability and compliant trade paperwork are replacing marketing claims as the basis of buyer trust. This trend is equally relevant to Chinese agarwood exporters: international buyers increasingly treat CITES permits, GC-MS reports and batch traceability files as standard requirements.
