China Releases T/CHCIA 054-2026 Group Standard for Natural Incense Sticks, Effective 1 November

A dedicated evaluation basis for natural incense sticks

The China Daily Chemical Industry Association has issued group standard T/CHCIA 054-2026 'Natural Incense Products - Incense Sticks', released on 15 October 2026 and entering into force on 1 November 2026. It specifies terms and definitions, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and requirements for labelling, packaging, transport and storage. It applies to stick-form incense made from natural fragrances, natural binders, plant extracts and water. For the agarwood incense segment, this means an assessment model long based on experience and reputation now has a referenceable technical document.

Key change: naturalness written into the technical clauses

Beyond generic product requirements, the standard addresses material selection, natural attributes, appearance and sensory profile, combustion performance and specific compounds. Notably, it requires materials to derive from naturally occurring substances - essential oils, exudates, metabolites, extracts and water - and restricts the use of chemically synthesised fragrance compounds as aroma modifiers or enhancers. For manufacturers, raw-material screening, supplier management, formula control and production-process control all become mandatory quality-control steps.

What it means for the trade

The agarwood incense market has long suffered from opaque binder ratios, synthetic aromas passed off as natural, and no basis for assessing combustion safety. A group standard is not legally binding, but it gives third-party laboratories an enforceable basis for judgement and gives brands a differentiated compliance claim. Buyers should still check the laboratory's CMA accreditation, whether the report number can be verified on the issuing body's official platform, and whether the conclusion explicitly states 'no artificial treatment'.
