China Guardian HK Autumn Auction: Vietnamese 'Shengjie' Kyara Mountain Sells for HK$15.477 Million as Bidding on Top-Grade Material Turns Rational

HK$15.477 million for a roughly 2,500-gram piece

On 6 October, China Guardian Hong Kong held its "Guanhua — Fine Bronzes, Scholar's Objects and Classical Furniture" session of the 2026 autumn auction. A Vietnamese shengjie (live-formed) kyara mountain weighing about five jin (roughly 2,500 grams) and measuring about 14 × 11 × 37 cm sold for HK$15.477 million against an estimate of HK$15–18 million. Converted by weight, top-grade kyara reaches tens of thousands of yuan per gram, far above gold. The notable point is that the hammer price fell inside rather than above the estimate, suggesting bidding on top-grade aromatic material has become more measured rather than chasing headlines; the classical furniture and bronze segments alongside it performed steadily.

Three concepts: agarwood, kyara and 'shengjie'

Making sense of such prices requires separating three ideas. Agarwood forms when trees of the Thymelaeaceae family are wounded and secrete resin that matures over many years. Kyara is the exceptional subset, denser in resin and richer in oil, fragrant at room temperature and layered when heated — traditionally called the "sarira of incense." Shengjie refers to resin formed while the tree is still alive, as opposed to shujie, formed after the tree dies and ages naturally. Stacked together, wild shengjie kyara is scarce by construction. By origin, Nha Trang and Phu Sen in Vietnam are widely regarded as top quality, while Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia produce material with differing aromatic profiles and market acceptance. Since the Tang and Song dynasties agarwood has led the "four great aromatics" (chen, tan, long, she), with kyara as its pinnacle — a cultural sediment that carries value well beyond the wood itself.

Record prices are anecdotes, not benchmarks

It bears stressing that HK$15.477 million corresponds to a rare old live-formed piece that met every standard of oil content, aroma and condition, and was unusual in size besides; it sits in a different league from the vast majority of traded material and cannot be extrapolated into general market pricing. Across the grading ladder — entry-level induced agarwood, ordinary wild material, sinking-grade old stock, and finally five-figure-per-gram kyara — each tier differs by an order of magnitude in output and scarcity. For newcomers the three most common risks are high-pressure oil injection, passing off inferior grades, and forged certificates. The right order of checks is: can the certificate be verified on the issuing laboratory's official platform; does the item match the certificate; and are there visible repairs or optimisation treatments.
