Hainan's Jianfeng Town Planned as an "Agarwood Industry Town": 1,000+ Mu Under Intercropping, One Million Seedlings a Year

According to the Party news portal of People's Daily Online, discipline inspection staff of Ledong Li Autonomous County in Hainan visited Jianfeng Town at the foot of Jianfengling in October, touring processing workshops and intercropping bases and following up with agarwood growers. Known anciently as "qiongzhi", agarwood finds a favorable home in Jianfeng's rainforest climate and volcanic soils. In recent years the town has promoted agarwood intercropping under forest canopy: total plantation area now exceeds 1,000 mu, with over 500 mu under intercropping and about one million seedlings raised annually. Processing and cultural-experience businesses have followed, creating local jobs and income.

Gaps in supporting capacity also surfaced. During earlier visits, the head of a cooperative reported slow land-approval and filing procedures when expanding a primary processing workshop: "sales channels opened up, but we cannot process fast enough." In response, the county discipline inspection authority pressed the relevant departments and the town government to act, helping revive idle assets and convert a disused school building into an agarwood processing park. With land for supporting facilities secured, the cooperative now runs an integrated operation spanning seedling raising, planting, processing and sales, employing more than 40 local villagers and involving 39 rural households in cultivation.

From primary processing to brand building

The survey also found constraints: few contiguous high-standard planting bases, a product mix dominated by primary processed goods, insufficient development of high-value-added products, the regional public brand "Jianfeng Agarwood" still at an early stage, and wellness and study-tour formats only just beginning. Local authorities have been urged to extend the chain, build the brand and integrate sectors, converting rainforest ecological advantages into tangible income. Ledong County has designated Jianfeng Town as an "agarwood industry town", with a three-year plan for an integrated planting-processing-tourism model to attract more growers and enterprises, achieve scale and raise brand influence. This "production area plus cultural tourism plus public brand" path matches the tertiary-industry integration direction pursued across Hainan and Guangdong, and opens new scenarios for incense culture tourism and study travel.
