China Guardian 2026 Autumn Auction Presents "A Censer of Clouds": 51 Agarwood Lots Spanning the Three Major Incense Lineages

Three lineages on one stage

According to China Guardian's public information, the 2026 autumn auction includes an agarwood special titled "A Censer of Clouds", presenting 51 selected lots of agarwood and qinan (kinam) that bring together the three core incense lineages: Chinese, Hue-An and Nanyang. Lot 2262 is a Vietnamese "nine-fen sinking" raw-formed white qinan weighing about 490g (approx. 35 x 9 cm), sourced from Dongfang Xiangtang; raw-formed white qinan is described as more intense and diffusive than matured-formed material, with layered notes of flower, fruit, honey, minty coolness, ginseng and milk. Lot 2263 is a Vietnamese Quang Ngai matured sinking-grade green qinan of about 155g, taken from the heart root, soft and waxy in texture with a clear, penetrating aroma.

From the Nanyang lineage, Lot 2267 offers two pieces of aged sinking-grade material at 87g and 95.9g, rich in resin and solidly formed, valued both for display and for heating. Lot 2268 is a large twisted sinking-grade block weighing 971.7g and about 35.6 cm long; the twisted formation is rare and the piece is said to carry a Vietnamese character when heated. Lot 2264 is a 33.5g Vietnamese sinking white qinan from Nha Trang heartwood, with all sapwood removed so that it sinks in water.

Auctions as reference, not as a price ruler

For the trade, an auction special matters because it places transactions of scarce material in a public, verifiable setting and supplies a checkable price reference. Still, auction lots usually carry documented provenance, condition descriptions and scarcity support, and results are influenced by bidding-room dynamics and the buyer pool, so they should not be applied directly to everyday retail pricing. Recent market analyses repeatedly warn that material priced well below the lower bound of published reference ranges calls for scrutiny of quality and naturalness, while material priced far above the upper bound needs demonstrable scarcity to justify it. Third-party testing based on standards such as LY/T 2904-2017 and "one item, one certificate" traceability are becoming baseline requirements for circulating collectible pieces.
