Guangdong Maps Out a 100-Billion-Yuan Agarwood Industry: 700,000 Mu of Plantations and 15,000 Tonnes Output by 2030

According to Guangdong's forestry authority, the province has issued guidance on developing the agarwood industry with seven measures covering technology and finance, brand building and industrial integration. The targets for 2030 are 700,000 mu of planted agarwood forest, roughly 100,000 mu harvested per year, annual output of 15,000 tonnes and a full industrial-chain value exceeding 100 billion yuan. Of that total, primary production — seedlings, planting and harvesting — is planned at about 50 percent, secondary processing including traditional medicine, health products, daily chemicals and crafts at about 30 percent, and tertiary activities such as trade, wellness and services at about 20 percent.

Standards and traceability first

The agarwood market has long struggled with mislabelling and counterfeits. On the technology and finance side, the guidance supports a complete agarwood standards system covering germplasm, seedlings, planting, resin induction, processing, quality grading, testing, packaging, labelling and traceability. It also backs state-owned or leading enterprises in applying for import-export business and building trading markets, the creation of a Guangdong agarwood technology innovation alliance, and agarwood-related programmes in vocational colleges. Standards and traceability are the prerequisite for turning a producing region's resource advantage into industry influence, and the basis on which buyers can judge whether a product is testable and traceable.

Finance, branding and tourism advance together

On the supporting side, the guidance proposes dedicated credit products for seedlings, planting, processing and the whole chain, plus planting and price insurance to hedge the long growing cycle and price swings. On branding, it supports an agarwood line under the public brand "Yue Lin Shan Zhen", geographical indication and certification marks for main producing areas, and participation in the Canton Fair and Guangdong Forestry Expo. For integration, it looks to agarwood museums in Maoming Dianbai and Dongguan and the Huidong agarwood park to build destinations combining planting, cultural experience, incense-study programmes, wellness and tourism.
