From Geographical Indication to Gene Chip: Dianbai Agarwood Rebuilds Brand Credibility Through Legal Rights and Technical Rigour

Legal Rights: A 2,128 Square Kilometre Protected Area

To address the long-standing market failures of counterfeits and inferior goods passed off as superior, Dianbai in Maoming, Guangdong is rebuilding brand credibility through legal entitlement and technical rigour. Public reports indicate that "Dianbai Agarwood" has entered the public notification stage of agricultural product geographical indication (GI) registration, designating a protected area of 2,128 square kilometres. The local government is also advancing the application for a national GI certification mark and has successfully registered a series of collective marks such as "Nanchen", creating a dual-driver structure of "regional public brand plus enterprise brands". GI registration is, in essence, protection of an appellation of origin: only agarwood grown and processed under Dianbai's specific soil, water and climate conditions may legally carry the name.

Technical Rigour: Genome Sequencing, Gene Chips and Blockchain Traceability

On the standards side, the local agarwood research institute has completed genome sequencing and map construction for qinan and common Aquilaria sinensis varieties, and developed DNA molecular marker testing (gene chips) to provide a quantifiable scientific basis for authenticating agarwood varieties. Combined with a blockchain traceability mechanism and a CMA-accredited testing centre, Dianbai agarwood is shifting from a traditional "resource exporter" to a modern "standard setter". For the industry, converting experience-based sensory judgement into reproducible laboratory data is a key step towards reducing information asymmetry and transaction friction.

Chain Extension and Compliance Notes

On the industrial side, a full chain has taken shape covering seedling raising, planting, processing, R&D, branding and wellness tourism. Beyond trunk-formed resin, branches and leaves are turned into high-value essential oil through modern extraction, offcuts become fast-moving goods such as agarwood soap and tea, and spent residues are converted into bio-fertiliser - a near zero-waste circular model. An "enterprise plus cooperative plus farmer" benefit-sharing mechanism has also produced a number of specialised agarwood villages. A reminder remains in order: all Aquilaria species are listed in CITES Appendix II, so cross-border trade requires the relevant permits, test reports and traceability documents should be kept together, and origin stories should never replace verifiable test data.
