Open bidding adds a public ledger

Industry media report that during the 2026 autumn Hong Kong auction season, a substantial piece of Vietnamese raw qinan sold in a classical furniture and scholar's rocks sale at a price in the tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars. Previously, top-grade material circulated mainly through private deals within incense circles, with prices sustained by consensus. Entering the catalogue, preview and open bidding process of a major auction house gives the market a publicly searchable pricing reference.

Observers caution that auction entry is only the beginning of price system construction. Compared with bronzes, furniture and scholar's objects, qinan still lacks a dense enough set of comparable sales, so a single hammer price should not be extrapolated into a category-wide quote.

Test reports are becoming a hard threshold

In parallel, testing is being standardised. Third-party laboratories commonly combine species identification by microscopy and DNA barcoding, rapid FTIR screening and GC-MS analysis of marker compounds such as agarotetrol, sesquiterpenes and chromones, to distinguish naturally formed resin from oil-soaked, glue-injected or synthetic-fragrance-treated material, referencing standards including GB/T 38571-2020, LY/T 3223-2020 and SN/T 4891-2017. CMA or CNAS accreditation and official online report verification are basic requirements for validity.

The limits of testing should also be understood objectively: standard composition analysis can confirm characteristic agarwood markers and detect artificial fragrances or dyes, but generally cannot by itself prove wild versus plantation origin, and professional reports avoid absolute claims such as one hundred percent wild.
