Guangdong Issues Agarwood Industry Guidelines: 700,000 Mu Planted and 100 Billion Yuan Output by 2030

Seven measures spanning the chain from seedling to retail

According to publicly reported documents and domestic media coverage, the guidelines cover improved varieties, standard systems, planting quality, processing upgrades, brand building and cultural tourism. On the seedling side, Guangdong will continue surveys of agarwood germplasm resources, strengthen national and provincial germplasm banks focusing on Dianbai qinan, Dongguan guanxiang and Huidong green qinan, and build a traceability system while cracking down on counterfeit seedlings.

The province currently has roughly 300,000 mu of qinan and 200,000 mu of Aquilaria sinensis plantations. Dianbai district in Maoming is the country's largest agarwood planting, processing and trading hub with more than 4,000 related enterprises. Researchers note that since 2010, selected easy-resin-forming varieties allow 3-4 year old saplings to be induced by cold drilling, yielding agarwood with 10-20% oil content after 2-3 years, shortening plantation cycles to 6-8 years.

From selling raw material to selling standards

The guidelines back processing upgrades into decoction pieces, essential oils, incense, beads and tea, support quality testing centres in Maoming and Dongguan, and aim to cultivate over 200 operators with more than 500 mu each by 2030 while raising per-tree resin yield by one to two times. The policy signal is a shift from fragmented raw material trading toward standardised, testable and traceable competition.
