Hainan International Agarwood Sci-Tech Park Lands in Chengmai with RMB 269m Investment and 900,000 Aquilaria Trees Planned

Building on stock land, not new land

With a total investment of RMB 269 million, the park did not acquire new land. Instead it revitalized more than 2,000 mu of existing land at the Jinlu Hongfeng farm, upgrading existing facilities and adding processing, R&D and trading blocks, with 900,000 Aquilaria sinensis trees planned. This significantly cut upfront cost and made the park the "chain leader" of Jiale Town's full agarwood industry chain.

From selling logs to deep processing

The park's core is not planting alone but three pillars: deep processing, international trade and agarwood culture. It will prioritize agarwood essential oils, daily chemical products and wellness goods, while building the China (Hainan) International Agarwood Trading Center and an agarwood museum, forming an integrated "planting – R&D – processing – trading" operation. This aims to end the old pattern of shipping whole trees out and letting value-added margins flow elsewhere. Jiale is one of the native distribution areas and main producing regions of Aquilaria sinensis; the town still has nine century-old agarwood trees, one over 300 years old, known locally as the "King of Fragrance".

Bringing science down to the fields

Jiale also set up an "agarwood sci-tech courtyard" linking the Hainan PhD Association, Hainan University and the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences. Hainan University has stationed seven master's and doctoral students there, working on robotic-arm harvesting: the arm handles rough cutting while workers finish fine detail, raising efficiency and lowering labor intensity, with core patent applications already underway.
