Many enthusiasts can tell Hui'an from Xingzhou by scent, yet cannot answer the most basic question: where does agarwood actually come from?

It is neither a wood nor a resin. It is the product of a long battle between a wounded Aquilaria tree and fungi. Understanding this explains why agarwood is sold by the gram, why kyara commands astronomical prices, and why cultivated agarwood never quite matches wild material.

1. The Essence: A Stress Response, Not the Tree Itself

A healthy Aquilaria tree has pale, loose, odorless wood. Agarwood begins with a wound — lightning, insects, a cut, a storm-broken branch — any injury that lets fungi enter.

The tree responds by secreting resinous compounds around the infected zone to wall it off. This war lasts years or decades. The dark, resin-saturated tissue that eventually forms is agarwood. As the trade saying goes: agarwood is "the scar of a sick tree" — the older the scar, the deeper the fragrance.

2. Four Stages from Pale Wood to Sinking Grade

Stage 1 — Wounding & infection. Fungi (Aspergillus, Fusarium, etc.) enter; the tree secretes initial resin. Light in color and oil, sweetly scented — the lowest grade.

Stage 2 — Resin spread. Resin permeates surrounding tissue along the vessels; fragrance becomes distinct, but density is still low and the piece floats.

Stage 3 — Aging & accumulation. The decisive stage. Resin oxidizes and polymerizes over years, building the cool, sweet, floral, milky layers of aroma. Only material dense enough to sink — "sinkers" — crosses the price watershed.

Stage 4 — Fallen & buried (some material). After tree death, buried wood undergoes secondary maturation, yielding "earth" and "water" grades with the deepest character.

3. Why Kyara Is the Ceiling

Ordinary agarwood resin is solidified; kyara's resin remains semi-active — soft, waxy, curling under a blade, sticky when chewed, cool-sweet at room temperature. The four hard tests: soft waxy texture, layered aroma, natural oil lines, clean lifting smoke. The combination of specific fungi, tree, climate and time occurs so rarely that authentic kyara prices exceed ordinary agarwood by an order of magnitude. Most "kyara" on the market is inoculated cultivated material; always verify high-value pieces in person.

4. Cultivated Agarwood: Process Copyable, Time Not

Inoculation techniques (nailing, fungal infusion) spread across Hainan, Guangdong and Vietnam, turning chance into agriculture — a good thing that lowered entry prices. But cultivation controls infection, not maturation. Three-to-five-year oil cannot match sixty years of aging; that gap is measured in time, and time is what the price reflects.

5. Three Practical Conclusions

1. Judge by layered aroma, not blackness. Soaked fakes are glossy black; true high grades show natural oil lines and multi-layer scent.
2. Ask maturation age, not "wild." Sellers who cannot state region, method and age are selling stories.
